353 girls and adolescents have joined the Realize Your Dreams scholarship program, which is implemented as part of the ‘Reaching Zero’ Pregnancy in Girls and Adolescents Initiative, an initiative developed by the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, the United Nations, and the United Nations’ Population Fund. With the support of the Embassy of Canada and in coordination with the government of El Salvador and with the support of implementing partners.

The scholarships are an empowerment action that aims to continue education and school reintegration of girls and adolescents who are in situations of vulnerability such as poverty, disability, who have been victims of violence or early pregnancies.

Currently the scholarships have been targeted to 200 girls and adolescents from the departments of Ahuachapan and Sonsonate, through the EDUCO Foundation and with funding from the Government of Canada. However, the scholarship program has as its philosophy the search for new allies, so it is currently coordinated with the Chancellery of El Salvador the incorporation of new allies through Salvadorans abroad who have joined this important initiative.

The first grants were awarded in 2019, in the municipalities of Santa Ana, Ahuachapan, Izalco, Acajutla, Colon, San Martin, Soyapango, San Miguel, Jiquilisco and Usulutan, when they benefited the first 200 girls and teenagers.

In terms of supplies, the scholarships contain:

In the event that the scholarship holder is already a mother, the scholarship includes expenses for the care and school package of her son or daughter.

In addition, the accompaniment of the girl or adolescent and her family is guaranteed, focused on the social valuation of the education she receives and its contribution to the life of the adolescent, and also a coordination with the school, focused on academic performance and extracurricular activities.

By participating in the Make Your Dreams scholarships, adolescents will be able to participate, if they so decide, in the educational platform “Leaders for Life”, a virtual and friendly training space to strengthen their self-esteem, recognize and value their skills. Fellows also have access to information to take care of their health and to prevent violence.

The scholarship program will also provide accompaniment to adolescents so that they can receive other services such as:

  • Health checks during pregnancy, delivery and after birth.
  • Child health check-ups as needed.
  • Suppor for Child care services while Girls and adolescentes are in school.
  • Support for other psychological and legal accompaniment programs.
